FMP YEAR 2
Research
1. Influences / Inspiration
I watched Marvel and DC all the time in my childhood, and watched almost all of the films from them, I studied them in great detail, and because of that I could replicate them in my own way. I know Batman films inspire conversations about them, which shows how popular they are. I wish to do the same, to make my short film do the same thing with my target audience.

I'm inspired by the range and variability of superhero films like the Flash movie, due to a great plot and a unique effects style. I thought Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was great, from it's characters to the world building. I hope I can achieve a replication of the same element, improving both my story, and character, but also my effects editing, as their effects seem simple enough to master and copy.
The ideas that I am using for my story come from examples like Injustice, with the plot being that Superman has had a great tragedy that has affected his whole life, with him still thinking he is the hero, but through doing awful things that he views as necessary actions to improve everyone's lives.
Taking inspiration from Fight Club, because of the psychology of the main character, I can take that idea for my own character's progression and personal journey, from what you think on the outside as innocent harmless person, but throughout the film we not only see his true side, but the fact he is warping even further into that ideal, a demon to the Devil. As in the film, Fight Club, it's bit more complicated, confusing, and spoiler alert twist, that the other main character is actually the same person as the main character that he switches into, and was responsible of making a secret empire to show anarchy and masculinity, as the beginning of the film he wanted freedom and in the end, he was a criminal mastermind of pointing insecure men in the wrong direction, taking advantage of their hidden feelings to the point of becoming soldiers involved in destruction of banks and buildings in general.

My character was inspired by the dark evil endings in video games, where the character became the complete opposite from what they were like at the beginning and possibly replaced and doing the same thing the villain/his enemy was doing as well.
2. Ideas / Concepts

My idea is to make a superhero-themed short film about a story of a kid named Bob, who is having a tough time dealing with stressful situations, if not in his full focused state continuously, his whole life would all be ruined. He lives with somebody that has welcomed him unexpectedly, but unfortunately they suffer from his actions by being in his presence. If Bob didn't nurture people, he would too, suffer from his own actions. To take a break and get away from his situation, he has a routine to relax by walking around. The plot follows him suddenly getting interrupted by a rock being thrown at his head. Following this an energy pulse comes out of the rock like a surge of radiation, hitting Bob and transforming him into a superpowered individual. He gains the power to generate fire from the surface of his own skin, turning his attention to his assaulter, a man named Mob, a mentally troubled individual who thinks he is an alien. Mob comes from a secret society that recruits people to make superpowered individuals so they can create their own evolved species to overcome the limitations of mortality, protecting themselves from death. Mob must test Bob to see if he is ready to join them. Bob has other ideas, deciding to wage war against the organisation. Bob changes from the inside, slowly becoming something other than himself. This secret society, called Xenomalies, seeks to prove their superiority, with Bob deciding to prove them wrong, starting a one man war. As he progresses, he grows more sadistic and sociopathic, by the end becoming a dictator of sorts.
I wanted to do this idea because of my interest in superhero comics and movies ever since I was a child. I had a lot of fun attempting to make my own superhero short film before, and wanted to improve on that further. I had other ideas like a black and white 1940s-1960s style noir comedy to reference old media, and the serious tone of mystery films, by having a silly premise, and characters acting seriously over insignificant matters, like a missing fruit. The detectives will be taking it too, such as if a celebrity had been assassinated in front of a public crowd. While my main effect was going to be to frame images so as to not have motion in them like a Visual Novel Video Game, I couldn't do this because it would have been too experimental, and would have consumed my time, as was shown in my previous FMP. My last idea was a horror short video based on statics to tell it like it was live found recording footage, lost from the incident shown through the video. I couldn't do this because I was inexperienced in style, not interested in horror, and the idea wasn't fleshed out enough.

I would say that usually Marvel Movie's audience and fans go visit them because they want light humour and charm of celebrities personalities if not for comics or invested in the story from the first movie to last, Marvel Movies are usually comedies in some way then the action comes in later, as there was certain time where it started to be more funny and less serious or dark, as I believed it started with Ant-Man. As I've seen a review of a Marvel Movie that kind of shows how the franchise evolved into.

While DC movies are seen as to Marvel Movie Fans, as the dark and gritty, even though they can be as light or dark as Marvel itself if they wanted it to be, and it might be true that they are the darker side of Superhero Movie franchises, there was a time where a character could of been considered a Marvel character if they couldn't tell a difference between DC and Marvel, Superman, as of the Christopher Reeve's Superman 1980s films they were seen as the light fun movies that children can look up to the gentle giant that protects all from evil, nothing dark and serious about him. But when you see Zack Snyder's Superman from Man of Steel, he is all serious and violent, as the film is almost all about tragedy and action, Henry Cavill's Superman is quite the opposite of Christopher Reeve's Superman, and that's why people have problem with Snyder's films, it's too serious and sad, as people truly want a marvel movie out of DC, as Snyder was making the Justice League, his daughter committed suicide and he had to mourn over her death, so Warner Bros. secretly wanted to change the movie into more like Avengers to please the audience by replacing Snyder with Joss Whedon, in the end the results show that this was considered the worst DC movie, and then from that point on DC tried to be more like Marvel, but not as much. Then the Snyder fans reacted to the situation and decided to get Zack's voice to be heard, to show what his movie was like, and they were successful to get his cut released, which was proven to be more successful.

From this, as I know from the audience's expectations I should balance the mood and tone of my short film between a Marvel-like and DC Movie, to get the right feeling out of it while still being original. This allows me to tap into an audience that typically watches both DC and Marvel, as they are both the popular and famous Superhero franchises in Hollywood compared to other comic companies that seem underrated like Image with movies for example as Spawn.

Due to my research, I have found one of them has taken part of project using results based on data that shows people like characters that have genetic traits similar to of their own, for example, race, gender, and disabilities. Due to the diversity and people's interest of their own culture and interests rather than sharing love with everyone else, I would not like to encourage this behaviour and try to get everyone to like my characters despite their traits.

My main target audience I plan to have is Male Age 16-27 who are comic book fans and that watch superhero movies usually, with no specific details on race or religion, just in general or target all of them. I made a survey to clear up the data, as by now I have at least 8 people responded which would present my demographics to be for Americans Males Gen Z, as this is my data that I concluded from.

As you can see some are unreliable, unspecific, too generic, too vague, and don't get the right kind of answers I want, but shows most of them want the same thing out of superhero movies that you can mistaken them all for being as the same person. How I would apply this to my short film is by having the film include childish things for children, but still make it a range for all ages too.
4. Existing product analysis

From videos I watched, I examined how the effects might be replicated for my short film as well.

Human Torch in the Fantastic Four Movies had CGI simulations to create layers around Chris Evans, and mixed around him to create a mask looking costume out of effects.

Pyro in X-Men Movies is all about fire, as it can't be real due to the thing not actually coming from his hand, it is floating then bursting out, unless behind the scenes they have a invisible device around the hand that generates such fire. As I have seen another Corridor Crew video to explain a fire effect in another movie, which shows that it was actual fire, so you can't be sure if the fire is real or not in these films, but I'm pretty sure in the X-Men Movie it is CGI Fire. Also due to health and safety, including risk assessment, it says that I'm not allowed any actual burning of any person, because they would be harmed, and we wouldn't want any suing at the moment.

The Mist from Flash CW Show has effects I assume has opacity changes and maybe some particle effects to make up the gas, as they possibly can't use actual gas, otherwise they be harmful to actors.

I can use all of this information to create a sense of my own idea to how to use similar fire effects or if I decide to do gas instead, due to the potential capabilities I can use particle effects to mimic properties of real life phenomena.

While I couldn't find actual behind the scenes to explain how they did the scenes/effects, I can almost replicate the effects in my own way. However the way they used lighting in the scene is immersive to have the environment or background match with the effect to make it seem real as I don't need actual simulations to make the fire for me.

Thinking Ideas/brainstorm:
I will gain at least 2 actors, or 3 at max, let them improvise a fight scene and dialogue while giving them a script to base off what they trying to say, giving them a sense what they need to do if they want to, then edit the film in after effects to give off the sense of powers.

Working within limitations:
I need actors, as the actors seems to be my limitation, as it seems I can only be allowed 2 at max, while the other limitation might possibly be time judging from last time, I need more time to edit than footage/performing, I need balance of getting work accurate as possible while getting enough to edit for the rest of the time. I will try to convince my usual actors to film early as possible to get the footage quickly, so I can relax and work on effects sooner than later.

Find the flow Straight ahead Making Changes & Taking Notes:
I got a clear sense of my ideas and vision what to do now, I have gimmick for my effects now, all I need to do is just record it into a diary of sorts.
Conclusion:
I must control my time schedule so I can focus on my work so I can prepare for problems further ahead.

Theories
Todorov – Narrative Structure:
Todorov's theory shows his plot style is a loop, a cycle, while my plot isn't exactly like that, it's more of a progress, a development, a journey, and becomes something else completely at the end, as my character becomes the villain at the end, as the beginning he was shown to be the hero.
Equilibrium: Hero is having a horrible life, living in the basement of stranger, is the parasite of relationship
Disruption: Gains power and attacked by mad man
Realisation: He has power to change his life completely and should explore more of this world directly where Mad Man came from
Restored Order: Destroy the organization the Mad Man was from
New Equilibrium: Becomes the leader of the same organization.

This is for plot of larger film, not the short film I will be making, as that will be part of structure of disruption.
Roland Bathes – Narrative Codes:
Each enigma code represents a part of the movie to explain that it is has certain function and meaning.
Hermeneutic Code: This code is all about mystery, how this applies to my short film is: What is the secret society up to, what is main hero thinking, does he have other plans that we as the audience aren't aware of?
Proairetic Code: Each action leads to another action, constantly ending up doing the same thing at the end. My story is all action-based, about fighting for survival and superiority, literal or symbolic.
Cultural Code: This code suppose to show metaphor for actual cultures, but I got no history based works for this short film.
Connotative Code: This code shows that the environment or object reflects who the character is, so based on observation surrounding the character can we learn who that is. The fact my hero is living in a basement shows he is isolated and dark.
Symbolic Code: This code is like a metaphor, presented as one but meaning another deep down once you analysis. Mental Health because of main hero becoming insane and darker due to constant exposure he is forcing himself into by fighting adults, just for the goal of targeting a whole organization, he is attacking the people, as the stress is getting into him, making him more desperate, twisting his vision as he sees them as more as the enemies instead of a group that trying to benefiting themselves.
Levi-Strauss – Binary Oppositions:
My example is sane vs insane, but specially in my story, it becomes more than that, and my character becomes the opposite he used to be, as sign of other than fighting them, he's becoming them. Another example is chaotic vs order, good vs evil, inexperienced vs experienced.
Propp – Character Types:
Propp can help my short film by showing me what my characters' roles can be in the story, simply what they should do and can do, as I have my hero and my villain, although I don't have enough characters for every role and not enough story to make sense for the roles to be applied to, but with my last character, I can use the role of helper or adviser in the story due to the nature of how he behaves in the story make senses.
Po Po (Helper)
Mob (Villain)
Bob (Hero)

Stuart Hall – Reception Theory
I want my audience to read my text as the theory states what the author wants their readers to understand which meaning they see in a media, but in mine I want it to be left open to interpret to them, if they don't get it or come up with their own that completely different is good to me, as it shows how great of mystery my story actually holds.

Henry Jenkins - Fandom
I think this theory is sort of irrelevant, as I do understand why it works as I am fan of myself who wants to work on the franchise, but with my thing, I've just created it, there isn't going to be a fanbase to support it instantly, it's takes time to grow for such things to happen.

Katz and Blumler - Uses and Gratifications Theory
I understand this theory as I do this myself to choose what I want to watch in whatever mood I'm feeling, if I desire music to relax to, then I do that, so I hope my product brings a mood that people choose to watch it, but I still want my product to be just something to be chosen with, I want it they have to stumble onto. As I want this product reach to teenagers in some way and hopefully young adults.

Hypodermic Needle Theory
As this theory is all about messages transmitted into people, like some sort of subtle convincing, but I don't want that in my product, as it does have message, I don't want my audience to believe in it at all, and I want it to be interpreted and discovered as fun thing.

Steve Neale – Genre Theory
I believe my film has multiple genres in it and can be related to other films with such genres, but I don't think it represents or improves the genre theory accurately, as it doesn't rely on genre, maybe it does have repetition but that's not the point of the film. But I try to make it stereotypically superhero at the same time, which brings in the repetition to it then.
6. Action Research
By testing out the roto brush, I have developed an idea, a new technique which makes a roto brush layer, by adding effects to the roto brushed area, it might add a look to the objects to have superpowered like effects to it.
What I did was copy the footage above on itself, and used that top layer footage and started doing roto brushing by focusing on the object each frame, and you can put any effects on it due to not affecting the background because it only does it on the object that been roto brushed. With my first attempt, I used a football footage and added lens flare to give a glow effect on it, and it worked, the only problem then was fingers in the way of the object. Second attempt was using a SNL Stephen Colbert's footage of a juggler. By doing roto brushing on three objects at the same time I tested my skills. It didn't seem a big problem, which expanded my opportunities and potential scenes, and it seemed like I could layer effects, as I used multiple sharpen effects on top of each other, and directional blur in the middle of the stack to give off a nice glitchy pixel effect. My third attempt was trying to use the rest of the footage, by doing it backwards I improved the lagging and rendering for the next frame, making it faster. Only problem was that the previous frame didn't have that automatic assumed scanned area, but usually they are inaccurate anyway. I messed with the settings of the roto brush, which by also attempting to mix the order of effects to give off a nice texture, I somehow affected the hands even though I didn't and only focused on objects. This accidentally helped me a lot as it made the hands look interesting, by combining invert and cartoon effects together, I made the hands have a nice shading and lighting, giving the right look to it, unlike using invert alone.
The only problems with this is the time consumption doing each frame depending on the time duration of the video, and when the fingers get in the way of the object, as I can't get always scan the whole object then. It is also a nice reminder, that I started this because I found out about roto brush a short while ago, but that version was roto brush 3.0, and I recently discovered when I'm writing this (08/02/2024) is that it's on the roto brush 2.0 version, and I can only access roto brush 3.0 through beta version of after effects, which I can't access due to the IT Moderator Admin. Although I couldn't get the version that I learned about it in the first place, I didn't know the details or differences between versions, so I don't find it a big deal when I never experienced with the other version in the first place.

The fourth attempt seemed like the Spot from Across the Spider-Verse or even the classic famous art style choice known as Kirby Particles. I have particular interest in this one because of the comic familiarity and nostalgia it brings as it can bring style to the visuals.

My fifth attempt was a mirror reflection with balls, as I found it interesting to stumble upon as I can use it as unique perspective for battles like Doctor Strange and his mirror dimension, or Inception. As all I have to do is scan the objects then reflect them simply as that. I would love to use this effect because of many possibilities I can do with this.

7. Primary / Secondary data

I got so many examples from youtube that can help me understand what after effects tutorial I need to require the task to complete currently. As for example, Film Riot is my go to channel for tutorials and effects inspirations, as they have variety of ranges of effects to use, although from experience before FMP preparation, the last time I tried to mimic what they did, it didn't work out, although it doesn't mean it's bad, they can still be useful, just can't rely on them all the time.

I already made a survey about superhero movies before, and can use that information how to improve my superhero short films, for example
As you can see here people actually like
Superhero genre, one prefers comedy, while
another suggests it's formulaic, so with this
section I can use this info by making my short
film to be more original but keep the reasons
why it's good in the first place, although I
already planned it but I am more convinced
to make it more funnier, since it is how
Marvel movies are now, all about comedy
and audience expects and wants, not caring
about how comics actually are, but it is my
style to do comedic goofy stories and such.
In this section, I gather that people had mix
opinions and can only gather by improving
from the superhero movies mistakes is that
I should focus on my script to make sense
while see how to my actors perform perfectly
, But I do think I cover the CGI problem
because of my improvement in editing
recently. Still due to my last FMP, these used
to be problems before and presents itself as
an issue again, so I have to be extra careful
to not get carried away, as I need the
confidence to keep all my work in check.
How I use this to improve is to push my
limits if I'm not happy how my actors are
performing.

Judging from this section it is more or less
the same, and copy what I said from above
that I improve on writing and effects,
however I will ignore the fight scene
comment, as that it is what I will be doing,
and even the female representation
comment too as I have no connections to
any female actors at the moment.

I think I have everything here why what
makes superhero movies good in my short
film, which is good, except the only
exceptions are the ones with "ability to
inspire and instill hope." and "likeable
characters, overcoming, overwhelming odds,
teamwork" because my character isn't
suppose to be likeable as he is a
representation of the dark side of mental
health manifesting and growing as it's own
identity that was always there from the
beginning, only now to be fully developed at
the end, as shown to be the parasite in the
relationship with someone who was
complete stranger that was kind and caring
only to suffer by the man's behaviour and
already problems before. This is about him
and his story to be himself that isn't allowed
in society, that is the meaning, a one-man
army fight to be allowed to be insane freely.

Overall: I try to balance my focus on parts that needs workings on that my target audience thinks are necessary to enjoy the story and characters.

Script/Shooting Script
First Draft:
Title: Burning Flame Inferno Incident
EXT. Park – Day
Bob is walking with a thoracic kyphosis like posture and hands in his pockets like a typical moody teenager, as he is walking he seems zoned out, not focusing on his surroundings, he is just looking down at the floor not paying attention if people are walking by. Until a rock is thrown against the back of his head.

BOB
What the hell, that’s hurts, is this a rock, how did a rock fall on my head? Wait a minute that’s impossible, someone threw this at me, who’s there?!

In the corner of Bob’s peripheral vision he notices a glimpse of a flash from the rock suddenly, as if it conducting electricity, then sudden flashbang happens, as if during that light Bob somehow was shocked, seeing his dark outline within the light seemingly in pain. After the pillar of energy left, as steam and smoke comes off Bob even though there was no fire at all, crouching on the floor as he starts to rise up.

BOB
What just happened? That wasn’t just anything, someone also threw a flashbang, but that doesn’t make sense, the rock glowed, wait where is the rock? And why do I feel so different, I feel… confident, like I’m ready to take on the world! (Slowly and slightly smirking that show a sign of smugness and superiority)

Then suddenly a man comes out of the bush in some sort of a silly costume, like a children cartoon alien clown that is full of colour and unique pattern, he has stereotypical insane smile in a giggling mood and start laughing randomly, in the pose with one hand on his hip and other pointing at Bob.

MOB
It is I, Mob, and I have come to get you, Bob, so let’s see you are ready to come with me, or you just like the others, pathetic and dead!

BOB
You’re the one who threw the rock at me! That’s it pal, I don’t care who you are or what you want, but you don’t get to do that to me.

MOB
Oh, you think you’re ready for me, then prove it!

As Bob starts to run to about to pull his arm readying to punch, Mob puts his hand in front of his face, his arm fully stretched out, as the instant within about to punch Mob in the face, the hand start to generate energy and shoot out as Bob gets caught in the blast.
BOB
What was that, that, that was, …Impossible…almost fictional, like a comic! No, it must be a concussion making me see things, but if this keeps going I might be actually killed.

MOB
Ha! Is that all you got, then get ready to die!

As Mob starts to rush this time, as his both hands pulled back behind his shoulders pointing at Bob, charging up the same energy, looking like he is about to put the finishing blow this time. As Bob reacts in self-defense instincts, putting his arms in front of his head, as the hand pointing towards Mob, with Bob’s eyes shut, as his teeth expression shows he is scared and frustrated, then suddenly Bob’s hand starts to glow and show few energy orbs, as Mob energy starts to shoot out, it’s comes in contact with Bob’s hand causing a explosion. As the light disappears, Bob is standing up, looking at his hands, shocked and surprised, while Mob seems to fallen over and hops up instantly as if he is a jack in a box, with a larger smile as he is finally happy to get a worthy challenge.

MOB
Oh, you finally activated it, and you seem to repel my attack, this is going to be fun!

BOB
What the, I, I, I must have my own powers now, I don’t know how, but I should be glad for this miracle. Okay, Mob, or whatever you name is, this is it, your getting to regret hurting me!

As they both rushing at each other with same pose as their hands start to generate energy, with Bob’s facial expression angry and focused, while Mob’s facial expression is excited and calm. As their hands and energy touch each other, another explosion, but once light clears up again, they seem to have equal footing against each other, as they start to go around each other trying to aim their backs, as the others in reaction tries to turn around and shoot their energy at them from behind, and trying to punch in their legs, shoulders, heads, anywhere attempting to find a weak spot and put the most damage at, almost at a spin motion like a tornado, a snake climbing over each other, and you can see energy being fired towards at the skies due to missing and dodging. Then suddenly they pushed away from each other, using their legs to trying to resist the force and shorten the range of being pushed to, as they stand from the opposite sides from each other, staring at each other, as they seem tired and exhausted, now Bob is the one smiling as he notices Mob’s scratches and bruises, while Mob is frustrated and can’t seem to concentrate, as panting and dizzy in their natural body positions/stances as if they about to fall down within a few seconds.

MOB
You think this is it, I haven’t used my trump card, you might think of yourself as high and mighty now, but if you kill me here, the others will come for you, you be targeted for killing me, you will never be safe, so get ready for a constant war, it’s kill or be killed! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

BOB
How can you say that when I already kicked your ass fair and square, if your this easy, your men won’t be a problem for me, so yeah, this is it.

MOB
Your going to die for this!

As Mob body starts to glow, as if he is start to become light and energy itself, slowly and eventually becoming full covered, and then start to expand rapidly, as if he is and it is self-destructing, becoming a explosion itself, sacrificing his body to finish off Bob.
BOB
Oh no you don’t!

Bob pulls his arms out, like he is about to catch the explosion as if he is trying to push it back, as his arms to glow in a similar way Mob did, as he is start to use his energy to blast the explosion, reducing it’s radius, then it’s start to go back where it was before being pushed back, as Bob is being pushed now, then he starts screaming in pain looking up at the sky, as his entire body turns into energy as well and huge beam of energy comes from his body, covering the entire explosion. As the light clears up, Mob’s body disappears, only one piece of clothing left behind, as Bob’s face is smiling as his victim is finally defeated.
BOB
Finally, he paid, deserves him right! But he said there was more, if this guy was easy to defeat, so will they, they will all pay for doing this to me! If I’m this powerful, I might be unstoppable, I could do anything I want! Oh this is going to be fun!

As Bob is smirking again but this time bigger, he is looking at his hand, as the electricity has unstable pattern like a storm within his palm, he starts to walk away but this time laughing madly and his head high up looking at the skies, full of confidence and dominance. Is this the chance for him to become the hero he needs to be or inner darkness being released upon innocents caught in path of revenge and war.

The script helped out to remind what the actors were doing, and they can follow this accurately when recorded for audio instead of on cam.
The shot list was sort of useful, although I couldn't follow all of shots accurately and didn't end up doing all of them probably, but it also helped like with script reminding what the actors are suppose to do. But still, we decided to do different shots in the way through. As it wasn't really necessary or most important to focus on, it served better as a reminder.
The Production Schedule is just my timetable to remind me when I had to start filming and when to get equipment, so it really wasn't useful, as I already knew before and could've just looked at my timetable.
I didn't have capability to film off school grounds, as my potential worked better here. But the location reccee is useless if I can film anywhere and wasn't limited to a few locations, so it's a bit unnecessary.
Some of these hazards weren't an issue in the first place, except rain, because it ruined my time schedule, and couldn't film a long time because of rain, for weeks. So it sort of came true, but not really useful.
I find legal and ethical matters not actually going to happen, because nobody really knows what I'm doing, so I'm sort of in the low.
I tried to be careful avoiding copyright when burrowing music.
Although as much I hoped it would be, in the end it wasn't a good source of reminder of what the actors suppose to be.
Not helpful at all, this is just to serve the purpose to describe my location and what kind of situation I'm working with.
Final Plan
Film within single week and get enough footage to edit rest of the time, as I'm not being marked completely everything but my editing skills, as I need time to do the effects. As my last FMP failed because of not having enough time to finish the work, as I want to improve on this mistake by quickly finishing the footage first so I can get it done with as early as possible that I can have much time left to do the effects just to do.
